Miami beats FSU 43-35 in 2OT after a wiped-out TD and a reviewed end-zone interception

Duce Robinson's late TDs forced two overtimes, but a holding call erased FSU's tying touchdown, and Bryce Fitzgerald's end-zone interception stood after review.

No. 3 Miami beat FSU 43-35 in double overtime Saturday night, per ESPN. The final play came on fourth-and-31 from the Miami 46: Ashton Daniels threw for the end zone, and Miami's Bryce Fitzgerald intercepted it for a touchback. The interception was reviewed, and the call stood, Tomahawk Nation reported.

One snap earlier, Daniels had hit M. Danzy for what would have been a tying 36-yard touchdown, but holding on X. Chaplin wiped it out. Here is how a game FSU led in overtime got away.

Robinson forces overtime

Miami went up 28-21 with 2:52 left in regulation when Darian Mensah hit Elija Lofton for a 3-yard touchdown. That capped a 10-play, 61-yard drive that took 6:08 (our story).

After the touchback, FSU needed one play. Daniels threw deep down the left side to Duce Robinson, who caught it at midfield and took it the rest of the way for a 75-yard touchdown. Gabe Panikowski's extra point tied it 28-28 with 2:39 left (our story).

Miami's next drive started with a 24-yard catch by Malachi Toney and reached the FSU 46. On third-and-5, Ashlynd Barker broke up Mensah's pass for Daylyn Upshaw. D. Joyce's 45-yard punt pinned FSU at its own 1 with 35 seconds left. Daniels ran for 5 yards, Miami called timeout, and FSU took a knee to send it to overtime, per ESPN.

First overtime: Robinson again, then Mallory

FSU got the ball first in overtime, at the Miami 25. Quintrevion Wisner ran for 5 yards, and Daniels missed L. Thomas deep. On third-and-5, Daniels went deep left to Robinson again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown. Panikowski's kick made it 35-28 FSU (our story). That gave Robinson two touchdowns in the final minutes of regulation and overtime. He finished the night with five catches for 113 yards, per ESPN's box score.

Miami answered right away. Barker broke up a deep Mensah pass for G. Mueller at the 1, but Miami's Javian Mallory ran 25 yards for a touchdown on the next snap. J. Weinberg's kick tied it 35-35 (our story).

Second overtime: Miami's two-point try

Miami had the ball first in the second overtime, when teams must go for two after a touchdown. Mensah found Upshaw for 20 yards to the FSU 5, and J. Lyle ran for 2. Then Mensah hit Toney for a 3-yard touchdown. On the two-point try, Toney threw to Cooper Barkate, and it was good: Miami 43, FSU 35 (our story).

FSU's last possession

FSU needed a touchdown and a two-point conversion to force a third overtime. Everything went backward, per ESPN's play-by-play:

  • 1st-and-10 at the Miami 25: Omar Thornton sacked Daniels for a 6-yard loss.
  • 2nd-and-16: Daniels' short pass for M. Danzy fell incomplete.
  • 3rd-and-16: A false start on Desirrio Riles moved FSU back 5 yards, to the Miami 36.
  • 3rd-and-21: Under pressure from Armondo Blount, Daniels threw incomplete for Wisner.
  • 4th-and-21: Daniels hit Danzy deep left for a 36-yard touchdown, but holding on X. Chaplin wiped it out. The 10-yard penalty pushed FSU back to the Miami 46.
  • 4th-and-31: Daniels' throw to the end zone was intercepted by Fitzgerald for a touchback. After a review, the call stood, ending the game.

Earlier, after Miami's touchdown, Warchant posted: "Toney throws to Barkate, the 2 point conversion is successful." Tomahawk Nation wrote: "Miami takes a 43-35 lead in the second overtime. Florida State will now get its opportunity to respond." Before the final snap, Dustin Lewis of NoleGameday/On SI posted simply: "4th and 21… #Noles."

Reaction

Tomahawk Nation summed up the ending: "FSU's 36-yard completion is called back due to a holding penalty. The Seminoles' next pass is ruled an interception, and the call stands following review." Dustin Lewis of NoleGameday/On SI posted: "What a way for this game to end. Heartbreaking. #Noles." He added at the final: "Controversial ending in Hard Rock Stadium." Noles247 posted: "FSU loses 43-35 in 2OT at No. 3 Miami."

How overtime works

Under NCAA rules, each team gets one possession from the opponent's 25, with no game clock. Starting in the second overtime, teams must go for two after a touchdown. From the third overtime on, each possession is a single two-point attempt.
