The holding flag that wiped out Florida State's fourth-and-21 touchdown in the second overtime at No. 3 Miami is still drawing reaction on Sunday, and some of the loudest voices now belong to national commentators outside the FSU beat.

OutKick founder Clay Travis posted the clip at 9:42 a.m. ET on Sunday and wrote: "How in the world was this called holding on Florida State? This negated the first Hail Mary touchdown catch. FSU should have been attempting a two point conversion to try and send it to a third overtime." By late Sunday morning the [post](https://x.com/ClayTravis/status/2111815086432002493?ref=nolestandard.ghost.io) had more than 57,000 views and 1,500 likes.

Former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz [wrote](https://x.com/geoffschwartz/status/2111803224202076456?ref=nolestandard.ghost.io) earlier Sunday that "Florida State got called for an atrocious holding call while that DE had zero shot to get to the QB and that took away a Hail Mary TD."

## The play

Miami scored first in the second overtime and added a two-point conversion for a 43-35 lead. After a sack, an incompletion, a false start and another incompletion, FSU faced fourth-and-21 from the Miami 36\. Ashton Daniels threw deep to Micahi Danzy, who came down with it for a 36-yard touchdown, per [ESPN's play-by-play](https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/%5F/gameId/401858263?ref=nolestandard.ghost.io).

A flag for holding on offensive lineman Xavier Chaplin (No. 77) erased it. The 10-yard penalty left fourth-and-31 from the Miami 46\. On the next snap, Daniels' throw toward Duce Robinson in the end zone was ruled an interception by Bryce Fitzgerald, and the call stood after review. Even if Danzy's touchdown had counted, FSU would have trailed 43-41 and needed a two-point conversion to force a third overtime.

## What others have said

CBS Sports' Austin Nivison [called it](https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/miami-survives-florida-state-disputed-hail-mary/?ref=nolestandard.ghost.io) "a tight call," writing that Chaplin appeared to get slightly outside the defender's shoulder pads before the rusher seemed to slip and fall, and that holding is "a penalty that rarely gets called in desperate end-of-game situations."

247Sports' Kolby Crawford [reported](https://247sports.com/college/florida-state/article/two-hail-marys-one-flag-and-more-questions-than-answers-291456736/?ref=nolestandard.ghost.io) that the crew was led by referee Darryl DeBerry, who also worked FSU's controversial ending at Stanford last October.

Mike Norvell said after the game that he did not get an explanation. "They said it was on 77\. Go watch the film," he said, per 247Sports.

## The ACC

As of 11:30 a.m. ET Sunday, NoleStandard had not found a public statement from the ACC on the holding call or the review. If the conference releases one, we'll report it.

## What's next

FSU (3-4, 1-3 ACC) has an open date before hosting Clemson on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Doak Campbell Stadium.
